ADVANTAGES OF A SOLID STATE DRIVE
Traditional drives need to spin around their platters to locate data before it can be read or modified – SSDs don’t have this issue, so seek times are up significantly faster.
Page loading time is obviously an important part of any website’s user experience.
For eCommerce websites, loading speed is a huge factor: a slow website results in fewer sales. Customers get frustrated, abandoning the cart or site completely. You might think four seconds is a reasonable load time, but you’ll have already lost 25 per cent of potential customers at that point! (According to KISSmetrics data)
SSD vs HDD
For portable systems, power consumption is an important factor. SSD uses far less energy than regular traditional HDDs as there is no power used to drive motors in a SSD. The traditional hard disk industry has taken steps to address power requirements of traditional drives by implementing idle drive spin down and the development of hybrid HDDs, but even with both of these implementations, regular HDDs consume more power than a SSD.
Though cost for hardware is lower with HDDs, cost for bandwidth (in terms of $/GB) is much lower with SSDs. This is often a more important measure for enterprises than simple drive capacity per dollar. Enterprise SSDs are also expected to have a longer lifespan, making the cost savings add up in the long run.
